Webcams Still Cool or Not So Much?

I remember when webcams became all the rage online. Lots of guys who I met in chat rooms, on IM, and on Napster (back in the late 90s and early 00s) urged me to turn the webcam on so they could be mischievous or just get to know me better. I always said: "No, thanks!" because to be honest, that's just TMI and who has the time.

American Pie is probably best known for hilarious mischief involving webcams. It's an unspoken rule that guys, no matter how embarrassingly they behave, will always get away with murder online. Well, almost.

I personally took advantage of webcam chatting back in the early 00s when I was getting to know my significant-other unit's family before we got married and our trip to their country. Webcams in that instance turned out to be an amazingly helpful tool for all of us to get acquainted as we counted down the days to the wedding after our engagement.

Someone recently shared a little list with me that I wanted to share here, about the role of webcams in some of the top movies (Webcams in Movies: A Look Back). To be perfectly honest, I don't know if all the movies listed there actually feature webcams. I didn't do my due diligence.

I was surprised to not see Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard. What about innumerable Anime movies that feature webcams? I'm sure there's quite a lot.

With the onset of Skype, and Vonage, I think webcams have lost a little luster. However, I've heard innumerable examples of how non-collocated IT teams use them consistently for their daily Scrum meetings.

What about you, do you still appreciate and use webcams? Or were they just fun for a while back in the early to mid 00s for grins and giggles online?
